Iftakhar, Shampa
Abstract: In Bangladesh, English is compulsory from class one.
Teaching English in the government primary schools in the rural areas
through Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) is a great
challenge. The problems are manifold. The schools lack effective
English teachers having little idea of CLT and language awareness.
They suffer from low motivation for many reasons. This study first
presents an overview of primary education focusing on the state of
English teaching in government primary schools along with teachers’
qualification and training. Then the study investigates the definition
and principles of CLT and language awareness as the teachers
perceive and practice. The present study with 200 participants who are
working at different primary schools in rural areas proves that lack of
in-depth knowledge and training in CLT make it difficult to ensure
quality English teaching.

Nahar, Quamrun
Abstract: Access to Internet has increased the use of social networking sites
like facebook in urban areas of Bangladesh. This has happened everywhere
in the world with varying pace. In the last few years, facebook has earned
immense popularity among students because of its easy method of use and
free sign-up access. A total of 150 samples from five private universities
were interviewed to understand the pattern of facebook use and perception
of its influence on behavior of the users. The results showed that more than
half of the student users kept awaking at night for longer hours which had
confined them to a conditional and non-traditional life styles. They also felt
inattentive to their class lectures and academic activities. Every three out of
five students had considered some sort of impact on family and household
work due to the use of facebook.

Ashraf, Tasleem Ara
Abstract: Taking vocabulary problem as a colossal one for Non-English
Majors into consideration, this article analyses the main factors for the
problem. Enriching vocabulary is one of the major ways of acquiring better
skills in any second or foreign language. It is assumed that a person with a
stronger vocabulary stock finds it easier to carry on communication. The
principal focus of language teaching has been on the grammar of the
language for much of the last century across many non-English countries.
Despite the introduction of the communicative language teaching,
vocabulary is still taught as an integrated skill. For, vocabulary knowledge
is important for all the four skill areas. There are several effective explicit
(intentional, planned instruction) and implicit (spontaneous instruction as a
child comes to new words in a text) strategies that teachers can employ for
learners of any age. The article proposes a set of strategy like the use of
context, the use of morphological clues, the use of outside references and
extensive reading.
2015-04-18T00:00:00ZThe Concept of ‘News’: A ReconsiderationRoy, Sudhangshu Sekharhttp://dspace.daffodilvarsity.edu.bd:8080/handle/20.500.11948/11972019-05-28T09:26:19Z2015-04-18T00:00:00ZThe Concept of ‘News’: A Reconsideration
Roy, Sudhangshu Sekhar
Abstract: In the media world, ‘news’ is a most exciting term as every media
house virtually lies and survives on news. John T Delane said ‘Press lives
by disclosures’1. What’s the disclosure? The answer is News and news
materials. What do we mean by news? In brief, the news (NEWS) is
something new, but, one event (a general term of incidents, issues, themes,
happenings, even gossips or rumor, etc.) is to be considered news on the
basis of its newness and newsworthiness. However, a report or account of
one event is not considered news until it is communicated through any form
or any channel of media. Another point, however, very important is that an
item is to be news on how that particular item is presented. How we present
any news is also very important. Every news item is unique from the other.
Its appearance, placement and coverage give the readers a clear idea that
defining news under a bracket is really a difficult task. Subeditors
(copyeditors) of a news desk need an eye and insight to understand events
to convert them into news. Those days have already gone on what once we
traditionally understood as news. Somebody now can say that an old event
in a new bottle can also be news. How that new bottle of news is presented
and who is presenting give the idea of something called news. The context
and perspective or newer technique and technology, time, space and
thinking, demand and outlook of the consumers also determine the
character of news. Therefore, the focus of this article is to understand and
explore the insight and changing pattern of news using a variety of
definitions first followed by a formula, and then to pinpoint its character in
the process of its usage and practicality.
