Diabetes is a serious chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas either does not produce enough insulin (the hormone that regulates blood sugar) or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Elevated blood sugar levels, a common result of uncontrolled diabetes, can over time cause serious damage to the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys and nerves.
