Abstract:
This chapter covers the present scenarios of environmental nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in Bangladesh and their roles in building environmental awareness in the community. Bangladesh is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world, facing floods, cyclones, droughts, pollution, etc. Particularly, the chapter includes the activities of environmental NGOs in different environmental problems, specifically disasters, pollution (plastic pollution, chemical pollution, air pollution, noise pollution), proper waste disposal systems, sanitation and hygiene, river pollution, and climate change and its effect on different sectors and the environment. Like many countries, environmental sectors received the attention of NGOs in the 1990s when climate change became a concern soon after the publication of the IPCC’s first assessment report. The involvement of NGOs in this sector has been growing since then. Moreover, the author acquires knowledge of the environmental problems and disasters faced by Bangladesh. Additionally, the chapter discusses the involvement of environmental NGOs in the communication sector and their way of communicating with the people of Bangladesh.
