Phytochemical and biological analysis of methanol extract of Barringtonia acutangula leaf

Abstract

Barringtonia acutangula, a member of the Lecythidaceae family, is well-known in many cultures for its traditional medicinal uses. This study attempted to undertake a comprehensive phytochemical analysis in addition to examining the biological activity of an extract from the leaves of Barringtonia acutangula both in vitro and in vivo. The traditional medication Loperamide is being contrasted with the anti-diarrheal action. Loperamide considerably reduced the outcome, resulting in a 70.59% decrease. Similarly, at dosages of 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg respectively, decreases of 35.29% and 52.94% were seen in response to the extract. Additionally, the proportion of stool output was reduced by the extract dosages. In the thrombolytic assay, the methanol extract of Barringtonia acutangula leaves showed an activity level of 58%. And in the anti-oxidant assay, IC50 value for methanol extract of Barringtonia Acutangula’s leaves at different concentration is 17.546. Therefore, it seems sense to assume that the leaves of Barringtonia acutangula have potent thrombolytic, antioxidant, and antidiarrheal properties..
