dc.description.abstract In Muslim weddings in Bangladesh, dowry and dower play important roles; yet, socio-legal obstacles often make it impossible for women to obtain the dowries that are legally theirs. In this study, Isought to understand the various meanings of dowry, the rationale for the system, and the social issues surrounding dowry. I have some findings and suggestions on how to get rid of it. Laws like the Dowry Prohibition Act of 2018 aim to outlaw the giving, receiving, or demanding of dowries in order to eliminate these traditions. More adjustments might be needed in order to fully safeguard women's rights and end the exploitation of marriage agreements. en_US
