Abstract:
This study was aimed to make a comparison between natural dyes and synthetic dyes
based on different fastness properties and the costing of the dyes and their dyeing
procedure. We used turmeric powder as our natural dye and acid dye as synthetic dye. As
we know that the textile materials have lower affinity to the natural dye, so a mordant is
needed to be used to increase the affinity between textile fibre and dye molecules. We
used here two types of mordant Aluminium Sulphate and Ferrous Sulphate in our study.
We found here different result based on different criteria like shade% of dye, types of
mordant and the concentration of the mordant. Where the fabric mordanted by alum
provides good fastness properties than the fabric mordanted by ferrous sulphate. We also
observed that in case of acid dyeing it was more cost effective than the natural dyeing and
the cost difference was fluctuated between different mordant we used. Rather our study
found that the color fastness properties is better in case of acid dyeing than the natural
dyeing. Hence we all know natural dyes are more environment friendly than the synthetic
dyes like acid dyes. After all our study is imperative to make a comparison between
turmeric colorant and acid dye.
